Engineering success from the start

Offshore wind subsea cable installation is about far more than installing assets offshore. Successful delivery depends on the engineering, planning and technical expertise that shape every stage of the installation process. With extensive experience in commercial tendering, contracts and project management across the offshore energy sector, Anne Siri Røthe, Commercial Manager, understands the importance of getting the fundamentals (or building blocks) right. She works with customers to develop installation solutions that reduce risk, improve project outcomes and support successful delivery. Drawing on her experience across offshore energy, Anne Siri shares her insights into the engineering, planning and collaboration that underpin successful subsea cable installation projects.

Subsea cable installation starts long before offshore operations

Transport and installation is often viewed as the point at which offshore work begins, but much of the success is determined long before vessels leave port. Early engineering provides the technical foundation for efficient installation, helping to identify risks, refine methodologies and improve constructability before execution begins.

The earlier engineering teams become involved, the greater the opportunity to influence project outcomes. Bringing engineering expertise into the project at an early stage allows us to review installation methods, identify the most suitable equipment and assets, challenge assumptions and resolve potential issues before work moves offshore.

Decisions made during planning can have a significant impact on delivery. By identifying risks early and refining our approach before execution begins, projects can progress with greater certainty and fewer unexpected challenges.

Why planning underpins successful delivery

Successful projects are built on good planning. Without it, even the most capable offshore teams can face unnecessary obstacles during execution. There's a saying that poor planning guarantees poor execution, and that's something I see reflected time and again in offshore projects.

Effective planning considers every aspect of delivery, from engineering studies and installation methodology through to vessel schedules, personnel, HSE requirements and programme milestones. The objective is to deliver projects safely while meeting programme requirements and customer expectations, making it easier to respond when circumstances change, and helping teams adapt without losing momentum.

Navigating today's installation challenges

Programme delays are one of the biggest challenges facing the industry. Offshore projects involve many moving parts and several interfaces, so even small changes to the schedule can have a significant impact on vessel availability and the wider installation programme. When one part of a project is delayed, the impact can quickly ripple through the entire installation programme.

When plans change, it's important to adapt quickly. That means reviewing schedules, coordinating resources, initiating improvements and maintaining close communication across the project team. Subsea cable installation and burial also doesn't happen in isolation, so careful coordination with the next phase of work is essential to keep projects moving forward.

Reducing risk through collaboration

One of DeepOcean's greatest strengths is the ability to support customers from the earliest stages of project development. By bringing engineering expertise into planning long before offshore work begins, we're able to influence the approach while there is still time to make meaningful changes. Early engagement allows us to review methodologies, challenge assumptions and recognise potential issues before they become risks during execution. That gives customers greater confidence and helps avoid unnecessary surprises once work moves offshore.

Rather than stepping in only to deliver a defined scope, I believe the best results come from working alongside customers throughout the project, solving challenges together as they arise.

Building long-term partnerships

Developers are increasingly looking for partners who can contribute from the earliest stages of a project, not simply deliver work once the scope has been defined, and this shift is encouraging closer collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.

I believe installation contractors have an important role to play beyond offshore execution. By getting involved early, we can help shape engineering decisions, address technical challenges and support customers in advance of work beginning offshore.

The best results come when customers and contractors work as one team, with shared goals from the very beginning. That's the approach we take at DeepOcean, combining technical expertise with a collaborative way of working to help deliver successful project outcomes.

Looking ahead

The offshore wind market continues to expand, with established regions growing alongside new markets entering the sector. While the pace of development will vary from country to country, demand for experienced installation partners is expected to remain strong.

As projects become larger and more technically demanding, engineering expertise will play an even bigger role in successful delivery. Customers are increasingly looking for partners who can add value before installation begins and continue supporting the asset throughout its lifecycle. Offshore wind will continue to evolve, but the need for strong engineering and close collaboration will remain constant.

Subsea cable laying services and protection is just one part of DeepOcean's integrated offshore wind offering. By combining engineering expertise across survey, seabed intervention, cable installation, protection, inspection, maintenance and repair, we support customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their offshore assets.
